PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY.com) — In the ashes, “losing the church is like losing one of our kids, losing a family member that’s how close we are to the church.” Pastors William and Rachel Satterwaite find grace and comfort.

“All the neighbors they loved us and we were trying to do what we could to help the community and the community was helping us too.”

For eight years their church, Revivaltime Perfective Church of Deliverance graced this Portsmouth neighborhood. Lynette Whitehead worshipped here for the few months she lived down the street. “I like to hear the word of God and that’s what they did.”

Her drive to church this Sunday morning took an unexpected turn. “As I drove past I’m like oh my God that’s my church.”

Firefighters say the Portsmouth church at Beech Street and Highland Avenue caught fire around 11:00 p.m. Saturday night. Soon after crews arrived , the church collapsed.

Satterwaite watched it burn, then did what he knew he had to do and opened the doors to his home. “What we would do is bring our group into our home and just have a bible study and hope God sees fit to find us a building or rebuild.”

Through the gray clouds, the sun burned a light of hope and a faith restored.

“Just like God gave us the strength to get that church up and going like we did we’re going to do it again, I don’t know where or how but I do know we will we will come back again.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
